Steps in the Right Direction

Isaiah 30:21 – “and whenever you turn to the right or to the left, your ears will hear this command behind you: “This is the way. Walk in it.” (HCSB)

Ephesians 2:10 – “For we are His creation, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared ahead of time so that we should walk in them.” (HCSB)

I am in the dark in more ways than one this morning. The house is dark; there is no light to brighten my path into the other room. I am also in the dark about a decision I need to make, and just as with the house, there is no light to brighten my path into the future. The only sound in the house is the sound of the coffee brewing. As I wait for that marvelous beep, I also wait for an answer from You, Lord. I am fully confident that You set my feet on this path, but now I have come to a fork in the path, and quite frankly, it would be so awesome to hear Your audible voice telling me “take this path.” I crave signs and a voice that will provide the absolute-without-a-doubt knowledge that I am headed in the right direction, but I am afraid of only hearing “recalculating”. I have no doubts that You want me to move forward.  But which path do I take from here?  I don’t want to make a wrong move. Someone recently told me a quote that went something along the lines of “the direction you go in will determine where you end up”. Well, as my granddaughter used to say “I already knowed dat!”  I know that if I drive on I-95 North, I will not go to Florida and definitely not to California!!  Reaching the desired destination requires being on the right path. Yoga Berra once said “When you get to a fork in the road, take it.” Lord, I desire the destination that You have for me and want to be on the path You have laid out for me to follow. I have desire to reach the path, but I need discernment to recognize the path. Just like David in Psalm 25:4, my prayer is “Show me the right path, O LORD; point out the road for me to follow.” Lord, my prayer is that I would recognize Your will for me. Isaiah 30:21 gives me encouragement that You totally encompass me, giving me direction. I know that You have a plan for me. Help me to follow the path that You have planned rather than any path of my own limited knowledge and planning. Psalm 32:8 gives me the promise that You will not only show me the direction I should go but also that You will watch and make sure I stay on the right path. Lord, I ask You to determine my steps, my path, and my direction.

Ready for Christmas

Romans 15:13 – Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you believe in Him so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit. (HCSB)

The house is clean.  The presents are under the tree.  The groceries have been bought.  The recipes are waiting to be turned into dishes with wonderful tastes, scrumptious smells, and no calories (okay, that last one is just a Christmas wish!).  As I fix myself another cup of coffee and sit for just a minute, I can’t help but think about how You must feel as we celebrate the birth of Your only Son.  We run around shopping and cooking and shopping some more.  Checking, wrapping, and checking again to be sure we have gifts for everyone.  Are we ignoring the gift that You gave us?  We decorate the tree, decorate the table, decorate both inside and outside the house.  We cover everything, including ourselves, in items that sparkle and shine. Christmasdecorations Are we shining Your light into a dark world?  We shop for weeks, sometimes months, to find the “perfect gift”.  We give hints and wish lists and try to hide our disappointment when we open the this-is-not-at-all-what-I-wanted gift.  Meanwhile, there are people who have no idea about Your perfect gift.  We can be so overwhelmed that we forget to be overjoyed.  We may be filled with wonder at how the decorative lights brighten a dark street but forget to be filled with wonder at how You have told us to be the light that brightens a dark world.  Lord, please help me not to get so caught up in the busyness of Christmas that I forget to find rest in being with You.  Help me to not get so caught up in the abundant gifts and food that I forget that You have given me abundant life through Christ.  Help me to not get so caught up in the celebrations of Christmas that I forget to celebrate Christ.

Light Up My World

Psalm 119:105 – Your word is a lamp for my feet and a light on my path. (HCSB)

1 John 1:5: Now this is the message we have heard from Him and declare to you: God is light, and there is absolutely no darkness in Him. (HCSB)

As I’m getting my coffee this morning, I am feeling like the woman described in Proverbs 31.  Well, not verse 25 if being clothed in dignity also means being dressed in a dignified manner since I’m still in my pajamas – but they are nice pajamas!  Since I am also getting coffee for my husband, I guess I can claim the verses that tell how she takes care of her household.  Trust me, a woman bearing coffee at this time of morning is definitely worth more than rubies to my husband!!  No, the verse I am feeling this morning is verse 15  “she gets up while it is still dark.”  It is the same time of morning that I always get out of bed, but the time of year means it is still dark. I’m not afraid of the dark, I just don’t like feeling my way around a dark bedroom, trying to grab onto anything I can to avoid the pain of encountering a bedpost or a chair leg.  Then I think of people who are feeling their way around a dark world everyday, trying to grab onto anything to avoid the pain of the moment.  They know the light of Genesis 1:16, but they don’t know the light of 1 John 1:5.  As a believer who walks in Your light, I’m asking “Why can’t the world see that?” and You send me an answer through Romans 10:14 “But how can they call on Him they have not believed in? And how can they believe without hearing about Him? And how can they hear without a preacher?” (HCSB).  I’m not a preacher but I walk in Your light, and Matthew 5:16 tells me that I need to let my light shine so that You will receive glory.  St. Francis of Assisi is quoted as saying “It is no use walking anywhere to preach unless our walking is our preaching”, and D.L. Moody once said “Out of one hundred men, one will read the Bible, the other ninety-nine will read the Christian.”   Lord, as I go out today into a world filled with darkness, help womanlightme to be a living example of the song we teach our children “this little light of mine, I’m going to let it shine.”  Let it shine in my words; let it shine in my behavior; let it shine in my demeanor. Let it shine because I know the One who is light and who has no darkness in Him.
